Under construction - still a lot more to come in the future.

On this space I'll just write what I feel about different sides to movies and what they mean to me.

If that appeals to you - watch this space.

As with music, you'll find very different approaches to movies among people all over the world.

Acting, directing, use of camera all contribute to the impact of the movie on the viewer.

On the website Internet Movie Database several hundred thousand viewers have voted for their favourites among all the movies that's been made through the years, and the top ten of the list looks like this :

1. 9.1 The Godfather (1972) 177,722
2. 9.1 The Shawshank Redemption (1994) 214,057
3. 8.9 The Godfather: Part II (1974) 101,007
4. 8.8 The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003) 161,442
5. 8.8 Casablanca (1942) 87,107
6. 8.8 Schindler's List (1993) 129,463
7. 8.8 Buono, il brutto, il cattivo, Il (1966) 48,511
8. 8.7 Shichinin no samurai (1954) 46,796
9. 8.7 Pulp Fiction (1994) 184,127
10. 8.7 Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980) 139,216

And in my - biased - eyes all of these movies belong high up on the lists.  Maybe with the exception of Star Wars.  When introduced in 1977 the first of the Star Wars movies was fresh, well made technically but with a somewhat childish approach to possible adventures in the future: If somebody's in trouble jump on your horse (or in this case small space-ship) and ride across the prairie (universe) to save the princess and win half the kingdom...

One important thing with a movie is to be able to surprise.  If everything happens linear and as expected and the unbeatable hero rides into the sunset on his white stallion, with the beautiful girl crawling sighing into his arms, things get a bit boring on the long run.

A couple of movies with unexpected endings, where I had to see them again to really fathom what really happened, were The Matrix and Fight Club.  Also on the IMDB best 250 movies list, but further down.

Another thing of importance is characters that are believable.  What they do and how they do it, and how the actor manage to fill the character and touch your heart is to me the "stand or fall" of any movie.  And in the same line - that the director manage to direct the production into something that you can recognize.  Where you can say that "yes, this feels like it could have happened".

The other day I started to se the movie "Green card" where Gerard Depardieu plays the role of a Frenchman that wants to get his permanent permit to live and work in the USA by marrying an American woman.  And when the two of them start to lie to the American immigrant authorities, they play themselves further and further into the deep shit because they haven't got their story coordinated before starting this game.  This is a kind of comedy where I feel that the roles are so stupid that I feel embarrassed on behalf of the actors, and don't want to watch the movie any more.  Gerard Depardieu is a good actor that deserves better in my eyes.
